I've fallen hard for an attainable icon of the 1980s. Grassroots Motorsports put up a good guide for purchasing them, which you can find !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I know that 944 parts aren't as expensive as most people imagine them to be, save for the clutch kit. What I want to know is if these cars have any idiosyncrasies or problems that are common with cheap SOHC 8V examples.

If you can do the work yourself and you're mechanically inclined then you're all good. You do have to be very careful with the engine though. It is an interference engine and the timing belt and water pump have to be replaced every 30k miles and the belt must be re-tensioned 1000 miles after that. other than that, you're pretty much good to go, so long as you keep records of everything and such. check out Pelican Parts and Rennlist for more help too!
Ask me how I know? I'm planning on buying one now!

Do it. I love these. If I could find the perfect one I'd get it

The important thing to remember is that expensive engine parts, interference engines with timing belt replacements requiring special tools, the lack of a real valve cover, lower power output compared to modern contemporaries, etc. can all be remedied with an LSx swap. But hopefully not until the original motor lives a long, happy life.

Interference. Timing. Belt.
Watch your belts and you're good to go. Don't cheap out if the water pump fails, either. That sucker is behind the stupid interference timing belt.
Spec 944s tend to spin ze rod bearings, so watch those if you rev the balls out of it on a regular basis, I guess. But really: DO IT!

good to know. belts aren't too expensive. I'll upgrade the pump to one from a turbo model for better pumpage action. Thanks Stef!

Hey Stef, would you say that this could be a good buy if I get my hands greasy?

That's a rusty hood. Make sure the rest of it's not rusty and it might be. Seems a little overpriced compared to ones here, but I don't know Canada. Runs, though? Yeah, that's nice.

This is the cheapest one in Ontario. And rust isn't too much of a concern for me - my Aunt's four year old Ford Escape is already rusting. Road salting sucks.

Ah, go for it, then.
